One life - Part 13
Bert had learnt to accept that Enny wouldn't be by his side for long during the year-long battle with the incurable disease. Though he was mentally prepared for her departure, he couldn't help feeling lost at the eventual loss. Trina was just as badly affected and felt sorry for Bernie who would have to miss out on her mother's love at such a young age. The bookshop was closed temporary after Enny's death but Trina continued to go to the shop during that period. She was there to cheer Bert up, hoping to get him back on his feet and to carry on with his life. Though only 19 then, Trina's mature and sensible advice touched Bert who eventually realised that Enny wouldn't want him to carry on living in despair too. Soon, the bookshop was opened for business again and things gradually returned to normal with Trina playing an extra role of 'acting' mother to Bernie.
It had almost been a year since Derick started his unusual collection of used bra and his collection was increasing by the days. He had been able to remain scot-free as most of his victims didn't bother to report such petty theft. Moreover, it would be too embarrassing for them to describe their lost item to the police. And he would have remained so if not for his greed.
It was a bright sunny day and most families were putting their laundry out to dry after a few days of wet weather. It was also a good hunting day for Derick who had grown fond of lacy brassiere. He was walking along a corridor in his neighbourhood when he spotted what he had been looking for outside a flat. Among the poles of laundry, was one which was filled with undergarment, including some lacy bras. It had been quite a while since he came across such find. He simply couldn't resist the temptation and decided to steal all the lacy bras. Just as he was about to remove the final bra from the pole, the door to the flat opened. The flat owner was shocked to see what Derick was doing. She shouted for him to stop. Derick who was equally shocked, dropped the pole he was holding and started to run towards the stairs. Unfortunately, Derick slipped on a bra which had fallen off his haversack and he rolled down the stairs. A neighbour who had heard the scream and came out to give chase, caught up with Derick.
Derick was handed to the police and upon interrogation, the police realised that it was not his first theft. They brought Derick back to his house to collect more evidence. Derick's mother was shocked to see Derick being escorted back by the police. As one of the officers searched his room, she claimed that her son had been a good boy since his release from Boys' Home. Just then the searching officer appeared with the 'loot' and upon seeing the numerous bras, she claimed that they all belonged to her and her daughters. But when she couldn't explain why they were all of different sizes, she pleaded with them to give him another chance. However, with the hard evidence in hand, they couldn't let him off.
